Like Ashley, more than 40,000 babies are born each year with congenital heart defects (CHD). That's about 1 out of every 100 babies born. CHD is the number-one birth-defect-related cause of death. Scientists do not yet know what causes hearts to develop abnormally, but advancements in the techniques to repair little hearts occur every year.

Ashley

For kids undergoing heart procedures, being alone without their family to comfort them amidst a crowd of medical professionals is absolutely frightening. Heart Hero capes were created with the hope that all children visiting the hospital for surgery or their cardiologist will feel invincible wearing their capes. Their cape will give them superhero powers to cope with their challenges. And their parents will be comforted knowing that the arms that always protect them are momentarily being substituted with the super powers of the cape.

Sondra Dubas and Kitty Burton were brought together by fate during Ashley's recovery. They were two women who did not know each other previously, but shared a common bond. That common bond was their children with congenital heart defects and the challenges their families face daily in dealing with their child's condition.

After seeing their children face the challenges of heart operations and cardiology appointments, together in 2009, the two women created Heart Heroes. Since then, Heart Hero capes have been mailed to children in nine different countries and almost every state in the United States.

Proceeds from this book will be donated to Heart Heroes, Inc., so that Heart Heroes around the world can experience their life-saving power!
